Why is the eye area the first to show skin aging?

Why is the eye area the first to show skin aging?

The skin around the eye area is thinner than anywhere else.  Continual free radicals assault breaks down collagen and elastin fibres that help keep skin smooth and firm.  Tissue in this delicate area also has fewer oil glands to help block penetration of topically-applied products or chemicals from the environment.

Dermalogica’s new Age Reversal Eye Complex is an efficient eye area treatment with Retinol, created to reverse and repair the multiple signs of aging.

Wrinkles, commonly known as crow’s feet, are without a doubt the number one concern of skin aging.  However, additional concerns including puffiness, dark circles due to pigmentation and skin sensitivity due to dehydration can intensify the signs of aging around the eyes.

Combine this with decades of squinting in the sun, late nights, lack of sleep and inadequate environmental protection and you have the tell-tale signs of eye aging.

As the newest addition to the award winning AGE Smart system for compete skin health, Age Reversal Eye complex helps reverse wrinkles around the eye area while bioactives synergistically help alleviate puffiness, minimize skin sensitivity due to dehydration.

Tried and Tested Review – Outback Organics Hand and Foot Cream!

Outback Organics Hand and Foot Cream 100ml £8.97

I’ve been a fan of Tea Tree for many years now; it smells incredible and has amazing antiseptic properties, with many hospitals suggesting its use as a pre- and post-surgical precaution. I haven’t, in spite of this, ever considered it for use as a moisturiser, largely due to the fact this it can be rather drying to the skin, so I was surprised to find it numbered as a key ingredient in the Outback Organics Hand and Foot cream.

However, when coupled with deeply hydrating Macadamia oil, it becomes the perfect solution for tackling cracked and bleeding skin – the Macadamia nourishes and moisturises the dry skin, while the Tea Tree confronts the possibility of infection and soothes and heals any cracks and chaps, leaving your hands soft, silky and healthy. Free from synthetic colourings, fragrances, parabens, SLS, SLES, lanolin, mineral oils and other man-made chemicals, organic and not tested on animals at any stage of production, this is a hard-working, pretention-free hand cream for an extremely reasonable price.

Foods to help us keep younger looking.

No 1. Lemon Power!

Give your day a powerful alkalizing start by drinking a glass of warm water and fresh lemon Juice before you do anything else.  It helps the body flush away the liver’s by-products that have built up overnight.  Use a straw to drink with so that the slight increase in acid doesn’t harm your tooth enamel.

Lemon Juice has many exciting youthing benifits:

Lemons contain vitamin C which is vital in keeping our skin looking young.  It’s high vitamin C content helps with speedy skin repair – a process that slows as we age.

Lemons help to improve indigestion by stimulating your stomachs digestive juices and in turn helping to control bloating, heartburn, constipation and other uncomfortable stomach issues.  As a result of good digestion you can drop pounds in weight – A diet that is high in vitamin C creates a better digestive process resulting in weight lose.

Lemons also help the body rid itself of excess water retention.

But critically, lemon juice helps to lower Low density lipoprotein (LDL) which is the bad cholesterol.  If your blood is high in bad cholesterol it can build up in the walls of your blood vessels, causing them to narrow.

And when it comes to detoxing, lemons are known as a hero product.  Stimulating the liver and pancreas to function more effectively so flushing away waste products more efficiently.

When buying lemons try to always buy organic un-waxed product.  Look for the thinned skinned yet heavy type as these will contain more juice.

Feeling fatigued and unable to focus? You might just need a drink of water!

Feeling cranky, fatigued and unable to focus? You might just need a drink of water, according to new research.

The small study, published in the Journal of Nutrition, tested mood, concentration and mental skills in 25 women who either were given enough fluids to remain optimally hydrated or were induced into a mildly dehydrated state. Dehydration was achieved through either exercise alone or by using both exercise and a diuretic drug that increased urination.

The women’s mood and cognitive abilities were tested during exercise and at rest under the different hydration conditions. On most mental tests, the women’s state of hydration didn’t affect performance, but being dehydrated did cause headache symptoms, loss of focus, a sense of fatigue and low mood both at rest and during exercise. The dehydration induced in the study was not severe: it was around 1% lower than optimal.

Although men weren’t included in the research, the results likely apply to them as well. So if you’re feeling a bit snarky or blah, it might make sense to hit the watercooler or have another type of refreshing drink — especially after a workout. Keep in mind that plain water or other non-alcoholic and caffeine-free drinks are best for fighting dehydration.

To check your own hydration state, peek at the colour of your urine: if it’s darker rather than nearly clear, you need more water.

While the old maxim about drinking eight glasses of water a day has been widely debunked as myth, this and other research suggests that maintaining good hydration (if not quite that much!) is healthy.

A few Myths about Oily Skin…

There’s no shortage of myths when it comes to oily skin. Here are some facts to further your understanding of how to really keep oil under control.

Myth 1: Oil can be controlled by stripping skin with harsh, drying ingredients such as alcohol.
FALSE. Stripping the skin of oil can actually cause an overproduction of oil. Why? Because skin’s trying to make up for and replace what’s lost! Those who self-treat oily skin with alcohol-based products often end up with dehydrated, irritated, sensitized skin.

Myth 2: Sunscreens increase oil production.
FALSE. Speak to us about our new, sophisticated sunscreen formulations that won’t clog pores, and even contain oil-absorbing micro-sponges for the ultimate in sun protection and skin care benefits.

Myth 3: A little sun exposure is ideal for drying up skin.
FALSE. Sun exposure is never good for skin. While it may seem the sun provides a temporary “drying” effect, sebaceous glands will fire into overdrive to help replace lost oil. The result: more oil on the surface than before.

MYTH 4: There’s nothing that can be done to help control oily skin.
FALSE! Don’t give up! An oily skin condition is just as manageable as any skin condition. Speak with us at Wendy O’Hare skin Care we can analyse your skin, then provide a proper diagnosis including a regimen of products and lifestyle changes to keep skin under control.

“…A little pinch of Salt”

It is ironic but if you take what someone says with a pinch, or grain of salt, you do not completely believe them… or so the saying goes.  However, salt should not be viewed with skepticism!

Most of us, and that includes, me add salt to many things we eat… We are constantly seeing celebrity cooks season their ingredients, which we all know adds great taste.  But we should all be aware of the well documented dangers of too much salt in our diet.

Salt is highly addictive and it will make you thirsty, this is why all bars sell salted peanuts and crisps.  This craving for liquid however is rarely for water, making you veer towards carbonated drinks such as coke, lemonade and larger.  Salt intake makes you crave sweet high calorie type foods and so higher calories are ingested and the potential for weight gain increased.

Reducing salt intake, while at the same time eating more fruit and vegetables will move your body to a more balanced and healthy state.  If you cut down on salt you’ll notice the difference in your energy levels, smoother skin condition and better bodily functions.

While we should not cut salt out in our diets completely too much salt caused acidity, drawing calcium from your bones and resulting in dry skin, brittle nails and stiffening joints.

Here at Wendy O’Hare Skin Care our philosophy is about healthy beautiful skin, but we know that healthy living helps us all to have better skin and to look and feel our best.

The top three causes of dry, dehydrated skin…

Intrinsic Aging

Intrinsic aging is the normal process of physical change over time which is more about genetics than lifestyle. (Lifestyle-included aging is known as premature aging).  Activity of the sebaceous glands responsible for oil secretions tend to decrease with age, and the skin’s natural hydrators decline over the years.  Aging also may cause blood flow to the skin to decrease, causing a drop in sebum production.

Weather / Environmental Elements

Prolonged exposure to the sun causes water to evaporate from skin, which is why sunburnt skin requires more moisturisation than unexposed areas.  Likewise, cold winds, air conditioning units, forced air heating and low temperatures can also dry out skin, contribute to premature aging.

Lifestyle

The trend of fat-free diets can deprive our bodies os skin-friendly Essential Fatty Acids (EFA’s).  This deficiency can result in itching, dryness, scaling, thinning and can lead to an imbalance in prostaglandins (chemical messengers that do many things, such as control inflammation).

Excess intake of alcoholic beverages and certain medications (such as nasal decongestants) can also contribute to dry skin.

At Wendy O’Hare Skin Care we have a range of treatments to help you look and feel your best.  So don’t hesitate to contact us.  We look forward to hearing from you.
